We had a fairly low-key day of breakfast. Later in the morning, our group went to back to the primary school to visit the school while it is in session, to meet the administrators, teachers, and to greet the children in their classrooms. As this is an English only school, each classroom of kids greeted us in English. We were impressed by their language skills and their calm, mature behavior.
On our return to the college, we finished packing all of our luggage. We did a bit of last-minute shopping and spent some of the afternoon relaxing or napping in anticipation of our very long return trip home.
In the evening, we said a bittersweet farewell to all of the buddies that have partnered with us these last many days. They worked tirelessly under the leadership of Harold’s right-hand man, Moses, to plan, manage, entertain, and minister to the kids we reached out to at the 3 day youth camp in Igalula, and at the 3 day VBS and leadership conference in Kigoma.
These young adults (many of whom attended Kid’s Clubs as children years ago) are the bridge to the gospel and a shared hope in Christ for children and youth in the area. Each one plays an intrinsic part as a Kid’s Club leader in a local church, or as a teacher in the HOTN primary school, It was a blessing and surprise when they presented each of us with a beautiful photo plaque of our team with the buddies!
Thank you to all of these hard-working, wonderful people who made the last 18 days possible:
Moses
Fadhili
Saidi
Rashidi
Paris
Jeremiah
Giadi
Aggrey and his wife, Christina
Lois
Christina
Nico (translator)
Shukuru
Sylvester
Dorcas
And of course, Harold and Coni!
Moses drove us to his nearby home (at the original site of HOTN!) for a delicious homemade dinner where we were joined by his wife Diana and his 3 children.
We retired for bed early. On this plot of land is the same location one of the two new fresh Water Wells that our SVCC VBS kid’s raised money for.

It was quite fun to see how many people we could fit into the jeep as we picked up each additional passenger on our way to Hope Chapel Kagera / Ujiji. We were able to comfortably fit 14 of us into the HOTN jeep.

While at Hope Chapel Kagera / Ujiji we enjoyed worship and Jack’s sermon on Philippians 4:1-9 while sitting under the shady Mango trees. The very small but friendly congregation and Pastor Bahati greeted all of us warmly. Pastor Bahati thanked SVCC for the Water Well and pointed out the condition of the water they currently drink, that is drawn from local ponds. We were told when the pump is installed it will be the only local fresh water well serving 100’s of people in Ujiji.

We met one young man, Johana (John), he is a recent convert to Christianity. His Muslim family excommunicated him and Johana now finds shelter in other Hope Chapel members’ homes. It is the desire of Pastor Bahati that Hope Chapel Kagera / Ujiji will one day have a shelter for other Christians in a similar situation.

After church, we briefly returned to the Bible College before going out to a restaurant for
lunch with Moses and the buddies.

Back at the Bible College and before dinner, the team walked down the road and shopped a bit, we stopped and enjoyed an ice cream before heading back to the college at sunset.

All were encouraged to bring an interested friend.
Our team was pleased to see that of the over 54 attendees approximately 1/3 of them were
young ladies.
After registration, the conference began with worship, and then encouragement and
announcements from Moses. He shared how the HOTN Kid’s Club ministry began over 20 years ago. In fact, some of the buddies we have been working with for the past two weeks attended Kid’s Clubs themselves many, many years ago!
The conference included teachings on "The Heart of a Leader" taught by Jack, "Leading Through Challenges" taught by Kevin, "Leading With Love" taught by Aidan, and "Leaving a Legacy of Leadership" taught by Tammy.
The lessons were balanced by several team-building games, worship with joyful dance, and crafts.
At the end of the conference, three young adults made a decision to follow God’s leading to begin the process of becoming Kid's Club leaders!
We all agreed that it was an amazing and fruitful day, filled with joy and important lessons
learned!

<div class="sp-block sp-gallery-block " data-type="gallery" data-id="1" She cooks for us on non-ministry days, keeps our dorm rooms spiffy, and does our laundry when needed.
Sylvester picked our team up in the late morning, and we headed north from Kigoma to Bitale to see the Stick Church where pastor Kubi met us. The little church is made entirely of sticks and palm fronds. Hope of the nations has purchased 10 tree covered acres nearby to build a new church to replace the Stick Church, with a new well to serve the community, and a playing field. We prayed a blessing on Pastor Kubi before we left.
Next, we visited a smaller church property in Businde near the Kigoma airport. This church is in a mostly muslim area. We viewed the buildings on the property and saw the location of the future well that will also provide water to the neighborhood. Water is so important to the people, livestock, and agriculture! Without water, nothing survives!
Our last stop of the afternoon was the market in Kigoma. It bares a resemblance the Turkish
Baazar, only very cramped and has rough terrain. Several of us bought beautiful cotton fabric from Tanzania.
We returned to the college for a late lunch, and then had a planning meeting about the one day leadership conference (which we are leading) being held tomorrow.
By Laurel Lindner

The school is highly respected and many local officials send their children to the school. It is an English only school so students are learning their lessons in English. Local government schools do not teach English until secondary school. Over the years our church (SVCC) has helped with projects around the school, including painting the school. My favorite part of this week was a session I got to teach on sharing your faith. I was helped by my friend and buddy Saidi. I met Saidi 7 years ago when I first had the opportunity to come to Tanzania. It was so exciting to see him in his role as a leader here with Hope of the Nations and to hear him share his story about how God is using him to impact the kids in Kigoma. Even though we live half way around the world, he is still my friend and brother in Christ.

Aidan's VBS blog

It was awesome to support the buddies from hope of the nations with their local youth (13 and under) ministry. It is called "Kids Club" and it’s similar to junior high ministry in the states but with even younger kids mixed with 6th and 7th graders). Was a younger crowd and it was eye opening to see how much they knew about the scriptures for how young they were (the buddies have been pouring into these kids as they all meet twice a week).

Being our second VBS camp we were more tired, but were familiar with the flow of events. God has pulled us through and have given us the energy to teach the games, and the words to speak in our messages.

Been having a blast learning more Swahili and just hanging with youth. They got limitless energy and love to worship God through movement. I love this.

As the last camp it’s been awesome to see that the same God is worshiped in all languages. I can’t speak the language but I know God understands. He is beyond language and is the same God, no matter where I am. Saw this very clearly at the 5 baptisms at the edge of Kigoma town in lake Tanganyika. Was a wonderful time in the midst of all the Swahili worship in between baptisms to talk to God and reaffirm his sameness. He is always the same God.

Kevin's VBS blog
My experience at the primary school was exuberant! After the last VBS I found myself more emotionally exhausted then I expected. Battling a lot of self negativity. Through this I've learned how dependant I am on the Lord to rest in him. A verse that I've found reasuring is Roman's 6:4, and Psalm 113:5, praising the Lord here in Tanzania has been a very enriching experience for my faith. Getting to know the little ones at the primary school was heart warming, seeing them doing crafts and playing games. I can't express this enough that the kids have a LOT of energy. This VBS felt so quick, starting to dread returning to the states, the Nationals and the team here have been a huge light to me.

PHOTO CAPTION: The boy in red to my left is Daniel, I got to know him only a little, though. His favorite subject to learn is Civics.

Ministry can be draining!
In the background but definitely worth mentioning are the mamas that swept the leaves and debris from the school grounds every morning, and the mamas that made three meals a day for the kids, the buddies, and us. This community really came together to make this great VBS a huge success.
After worship time, our morning shifted to a few minute-to-win-it games. The morning teaching was on hospitality and trusting and obeying God. We completed the skit about Abraham and Sarah, played crazy field games, and broke for lunch.
After the break, there was another praise and worship time, teaching on evangelism, and a
quick craft project before heading to the lake for baptisms!
All of us- kids, buddies, and our team, about 120 of us- witnessed five young people obediently follow Jesus in baptism in Lake Tanganyika! We were challenged by poor internet quality and the lack of phone charging capabilities for the last several days.
On the evening of Tuesday June 23, we set out onto Lake Tanganika on the HOTN boat
“Tumanini” with all of our ministry supplies. It would be a long boat ride to our youth camp in Igalula, which was due to begin the next day, the morning of the 24th. All of us – the buddies, our SVCC team and the boat crew were camped out in and on the boat
deck and settled in for some rest. The evening was cool and the stars were incredible. We were even able to see the Southern Cross. About three hours into our trip we developed engine problems- twice. Harold and Shukuru worked on the issue for a long time and determined that we needed to turn around and go back to Kigoma, arriving at about 4am.
Tired and a bit disappointed, the boat was unloaded, and the vehicles packed again. Our only choice was to take the HOTN bus and the Land Rover to get to Igalula. Setting out in the early morning, we began our trek- endless rutted, dust and rock covered roads
up and down mountains and valleys, with the lake occasionally in sight. Several times the bus, loaded with 18 people and supplies, couldn’t handle the steep grades of the hills and we had to get out of the bus and walk up the steep dusty road in the midday heat to lighten the load on the bus. At another point we had to exit the bus so that we, our vehicles, several nationals, produce, and livestock could load onto the ferry crossing the Malagarasi River. Up to that point, our team and HOTN has acknowledged the obvious spiritual opposition to this STM both before and during our trip, and because of that we are certain that the Lord had something life-changing in store for the people in Tanzania.
Our team and buddies finally arrived at the camp in Igalula late afternoon on Wednesday. We held the camp outdoors, under trees and tarps at a secondary school in Igalula. At night we were camped in tents inside of classrooms. The bathroom facilities were primitive. The Internet was spotty at best. Phone charging was nearly impossible and a bit dangerous due to the creative wiring at the school. Our 3 day youth camp began a day late on Thursday morning, June 25th. Seventy young people between the ages of 13 and 20 joined us. They came from many different backgrounds-Christian, Muslim, and other sects. We found out that some of these kids attend the local church planted by HOTN in the area.
Our team each got a chance to teach lessons to the youth. They also enjoyed many different games, crafts, and the glorious, exuberant worship time was spontaneous throughout each day. The HOTN buddies seamlessly created an incredible environment of cohesiveness and joy at the camp- leading, emceeing, DJing, and trouble-shooting. These young, Godly men and women did amazing work!
Over the course of the next three days, the kids were equipped with solid teachings,
encouragement, love, and answers to their many thought-provoking questions about scripture. During the camp, the youth learned about walking in faith, trusting God, evangelism, hospitality, God’s promises kept, journaling, and the full armor of God. Every evening, there was a rousing time of worship, praise, dancing, and testimonies around a campfire. Before we finished camp on Sunday morning, one young man Gaston, who had several spiritual questions drew much closer to the Lord and felt the freedom and release in the truth of the Bible. In addition, there was one baptism in the lake- a young man whose life was eternally changed by his decision for Christ.
Our team is more than excited to hear reports of what the Lord will do in the lives of these two young men and their communities!!
After rejoicing in this beautiful and solemn Sunday morning, we all said our farewells, and began the long journey back to Kigoma, arriving late afternoon on Sunday June 28th.
After much appreciated cold showers at the college, we were treated to an incredible dinner at Coni and Harold’s hillside home nearby, where we debriefed and fellowshipped before a long, comfortable night’s rest back at the college.
Team blog by Laurel Lindner

<li style="background-image:URL(https://storage1.snappages.site/VM6HDV/assets/images/24851725_565x640_1000.png); At every step of the way we felt Satan’s opposition. Broken vehicles, hot dusty travel and yet we had confidence that God would bring us through. The highlight of my week was meeting a young man named Gaston. He was the first person I met and we began to become friends. At one point we sat down to answer many of his questions about scripture that he had. It was obvious that he had been hearing lies and not the truth of God’s word. It was exciting to see his spirt released of deception and filled with God’s truth and Holy Spirit. I learned a new acronym this week, when this go not according to plan they says TIA which means This is Africa. We are learning and seeing that in fact that AIG, Africa is God’s. I can’t wait to see what he is going to do in the coming week ahead.
Zephaniah 3:17. “The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with his love; He will rejoice over you with singing.“

The Kevin Higgins Moment:
Tanzania has been such a eye opening and joyous experience. So much has been happening it's felt like a marathon but it's been such a uplifting experience, despite anxieties. Being given the opportunity to teach, play, and make crafts with the kids has been my highlight in Igalula, as well as learning the stories of the HOTN team members stories I've found to be deeply touching and healing. I've learned so much here and can't wait to see how the Lord will continue to work!
Psalm 103 has been in my thoughts over the last week.

The Aidan Thomasini Moment:
It has been so awesome to experience a culture outside the states. I always knew in principle that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord (Philippians 2:10) but I have seen this with my own eyes at the 1st young adults (13-20 yrs old) youth camp in the town of Igalula. I am seeing this in the worship and messages be translated in sawhilli. This is amazing to see!! God is not bound by language.

Our team has encountered many setbacks so far (boat carrying vbs luggage and food broke down on lake Tanganiyka, bus stalling on dirt hill roads requiring us to get out and hike, language barriers galore) but our team and hope of the nations buddies (nationals that help translate our messages and lead small groups) have persevered. We have a schedule, but at the end of the day, God has already laid out our trip and I’m excited to see how it plays out. A mans heart prepares his steps but God is at the helm (Proverbs 16:9)

I have definitely learned to be flexible (be bendable like a tree!) this trip and acclimate to the communal, joyful, relaxed, and slow paced (Jeremiah, a HOTH buddy, calls it Africa time) Tanzania lifestyle. I am learning to simplify my communication and explain with visuals in giving messages and explaining games.

I have loved interacting with the teens of igalulu as they explain what things mean in sawhili. Excited to see what adventures are in store for us!

Tammy Stone input:
We made it back to Kigoma safe and sound. We are all very tired and can't couldn't wait to shower. What an adventure we were on over the last 5 days. If you were ever told that doing God's work was boring or for the weak, let me bring them to Tanzania on a mission trip...lol...
Even though we faced many obstacles, we had an amazing time as we witnessed Gods hand at work changing the lives of these young kids. We witnessed physical change in their body language and the light in their eyes get brighter after hearing Gods truth. It's so sad that the majority of the kids have been told lies. Please pray that these kids in all of Africa have the opportunity to hear God's truth and that the fiery darts of the evil one are extinguished. One of my favorite examples out of many is about a boy named Gaston. After each teaching the teams would break into groups with their HOTN team leader, and one from our team. During group time I floated around to each group, in one of the groups a boys questions caught my attention so I decided to sit and listen to were his questions were going. He was asking many deep questions that could not have been truly answered correctly in only 15 minutes of group time. God put it on my heart that this young man needed his questions answered, so I grabbed Jack and one of our interpreter that I felt was appropriate to help with this situation and we sat for about 1 hour counseling and answering this young man's deep questions about salvation, sabbath, eating unclean animals, baptism, the day Jesus went to the cross etc... after showing him scripture of truth and talking with him and having him read the truth himself, we visually so the release in his body language from the lies he was told. When are time finished with him, his eyes were bright and he had the biggest smile. You could see that Gods truth and life was received. The following days at camp Gaston slowly opened up and told Jack his story. It was lost somewhat in translation and we are not clear if his father hung himself or was hung, and that he was from a village that people were using the word to control him. A village full of witchcraft, Muslims and 7 day Advintents. So from this his mind was full of bondage. But now his mind is free after receiving the truth!!! We gave him bible in Swahili and taught him how to use it to battle the evil lies he hears, he promised to read it daily. This is just one example how God is working hear. We now know why we had soooo many obstacles to overcome to get hear, but through perseverance and being covered with prayer from everyone at home, the devil was defeated!!!!
We had such a blessed time.

They loaded all of our luggage off and we went to the Bible Collage to get settled in. After getting settled in we meet our team buddies. Each team member was assigned a buddy who will be our translator and our host. Then Harold held a team orientation and we had breakfast.
After breakfast we all got settled in to our rooms. Then we meet up with our buddies and dug in to all of the ministry supplies we brought. (games, crafts etc...) and we all went over the schedule for our time down the lake for youth camp (16 - 26 years of age). Our journey down the lake will take 10 hours, we will be traveling throughout the night and when we arrive in Igalula around 5:00am we will setup camp and be ready to start camp by 11:00am.

After we went through and sorted out the ministry supplies we were all very tired so we all went and took a longgg nap and woke up in time to have lunch with our buddies. After lunch we packed our personal bags for down the lake. After that our buddies treated us to an outing and we traveled by Bajajis in to Ujiji for dinner. After dinner we went for a long walk to the Livingstone center and to the lake. We all received a lot of information about Ujiji from our buddies. A few of them had grown up there and it was very interesting to hear them share.
We then headed back to the Bible college and the team huddled up and went over our lesson plans and held our daily briefing. Then off to be we went. Trust me when I say it was not hard at all to fall asleep. I think we all were asleep before our heads hit our pillows. I stated this blog last night but fell asleep with my laptop becoming my pillow mid sentence before I could finish.
It is now 6:19am Tuesday and we have to have all of our supplies out in the staging area by 7:00am then I am going to need a gallon of coffee and breakfast for our long day that Harold and our buddies have planned for us. We were told we will be touring the HOTN schools and a tour of the local villages and visit the local market to purchase a few ministry supplies we need for camp. Then we will eat dinner and be loading on to the boat by 7:00pm to start our 10 hour boat journey to Igalula. We do not know if we will have access to the internet to blog while we are there and if not we will give you all a full update when we return.
